Karim Akhavan, President of the Rice Importers Association, Highlights Members’ Contributions to the Rice Market
In a recent statement, Karim Akhavan, President of the Rice Importers Association, emphasized the significant role of the association’s members in the rice market. According to official customs statistics, in the year 1401 (2022), members of the Rice Importers Association accounted for approximately 71% of imported rice supplied in the private sector, while non-member importers held around 29% of the market share. With a total of 93 members, the Rice Importers Association is recognized as the leading private sector organization in controlling the rice market and is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities in this area.
Akhavan further noted that due to the import ban during the harvest season this year, and considering that many association members have substantial experience in domestic rice, the association has decided to enter the domestic rice sector. This decision aligns with the country’s needs and the prevailing market conditions, especially concerning the situation of farmers in northern Iran. In collaboration with the Ministry of Jihad, the Mazandaran Provincial Administration, and local farmers, the association has prioritized the purchase of Iranian rice, thereby aiding in the control and regulation of the domestic rice market.
In conclusion, Akhavan remarked that the distribution and consumption of domestic and foreign rice are distinctly separated and vary across different regions of the country based on consumer preferences. The association is dedicated to its primary mission of maintaining food security and ensuring a stable supply of this essential commodity in the market. To this end, the association’s members will continue their import activities while also supporting domestic rice at critical times by utilizing existing capacities.
